Debqi is an emerging artist whose eclectic journey spans continents, cultures, and the human experience. Born and raised in a remote Canadian homestead in Northern Alberta, she developed an early appreciation for the raw beauty of nature and the resilience of life.
Throughout her adult life, Debqi has lived in vibrant metropolises like Guangzhou and Hong Kong and immersed herself in the culturally rich Mexico. This global perspective infuses her artistic vision with a breadth of colourful influences and thought provoking experiences.
In her explorations, Debqi juxtaposes iconography, Greek mythology with elements of witchcraft, probing the nuances of power and powerlessness, divinity and personhood, living and dying. The Mexican phrase “vamos a morir” or “we are all going to die” is referenced throughout most of her work challenging viewers to cheerfully consider their own mortality.
Drawing on her background as a midwife, Debqi brings a deep appreciation of the female body and motherhood to her art, infusing it with a profound sense of empathy and connection.
Her work celebrates the beauty and complexity of being human, inviting viewers to contemplate the mysteries of creation and the cycles of life.
As a working artist, Debbi’s journey is just beginning, but her passion and unique perspective promise an adventurous exploration ahead.
